Doina Rotaru:

Romanian composer Doina Rotaru often refers in her work to archetypes and symbols, which she carefully weaves into her fluid heterophones, thus combining archaic Romanian influences (especially in the form of a selection of ornamentation or the frequent use of the flute) with contemporary techniques and structures.

Born in 1951 in Bucharest, the composer has written more than 120 pieces covering almost all musical genres: from solo, chamber, choral and orchestral pieces, from pieces combining instrumental and electronic music to music for puppet theater. Her music has been performed at many concerts and festivals around the world. She received orders from the Warsaw Autumn Festival, Radio France, Radio Graz, Suntory Hall Tokyo, the French Ministry of Culture, various bands and soloists from Austria, Croatia, France, Germany, Iceland, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland.

Doina Rotaru is a laureate of important awards: the Romanian Academy of Sciences (1996), the Romanian Union of Composers (10 awards in the years 1981–2015), as well as the 1st prize at the International Gedok-Mannheim Competition (1994). She has been invited to give lectures on her music in Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Japan, Iceland, Sweden, Poland, Italy and Spain.

She has been a lecturer since 1990 at the State University of Music in Bucharest, where in 2008–2013 she was also the head of the Department of Composition. In 1998 and 2009, she was the artistic director of the International New Music Week, the most important festival of contemporary music in Bucharest. Her works are published by Editura Muzicală (Music Publishing House) in Bucharest, Éditions Leduc and Henry Lemoine in Paris and Babel Scores.
